Mapping the Landscape of Manufacturing in Mombasa County

Manufacturing plays a significant role in the economy of Mombasa County. Industrial factories and warehousing facilities in Mombasa are located behind the port and along the Mombasa Road towards Nairobi. Within the manufacturing activities; manufacturing of textiles, basic metals, food products, wearing apparel and leather and related products create most (73.3%) of the employment. In terms of the number of establishments, manufacturing of food products have the highest number.

Unveiling Kongowea as Mombasa's Epicenter for Wholesale Trade

The biggest wholesale market in Mombasa is located in Kongowea, close to the Nyali Bridge in the Mainland North. Goods and people from all Mombasa County and surrounding counties flow in and out of this area for transactions. Many of commercial land in the Island is used for retail sales including kiosks, supermarkets, banks and car dealers.

Mombasa Industrial Park's Role

One of the flagship projects earmarked to boost the manufacturing sector in Mombasa through Mombasa Investment Corporation is the Mombasa Industrial Park. The Mombasa Industrial Park (MIP) entails the establishment of an industrial park on a 575-acre (232.694 ha) piece of land providing a suitable investment in productive capacity in automotive, pharmaceuticals and textile value chains within Miritini –located in Jomvu Kuu Ward, Jomvu Sub county, Mombasa County. The proposed site situated about 15km from Mombasa CBD is owned by the County Government of Mombasa having been acquired from the national Ministry of Agriculture in 2013.
